Preposition(In, At, By, On) of time

If you are looking for a lecture that can make you well acquainted with the use of prepositions then here is the right place you landed in.

There are many prepositions like, on, at, by, with, for, over, under, in, and of.

There are as many rules as one can suppose for the use of these prepositions, but few, which I am going to explain to you here are concrete and reliable.

''It generally expresses the relation between noun/pronoun with other words to best explain the intent of the sentence''.

Use of AT

''At is used to represent any specific time on the clock, or one can say points of time’’.

Examples:

  1. He arrived at 5:30 when the party was about to start.
  2. Mark the time we will be there at 4:50, it’s my challenge.
  3. We shall organize the party at midnight.
  4. We shall meet you at noon.

This is also used for specific times like night, noon, and meal time. Be careful that it is meal time, not their names.

Examples:

  1. I shall get you back at dinner.
  2. He is busy at the moment.
  3. He will come at the end of April.
  4. I shall wait for you at dinner, tonight.

Use of ON

''It is specifically used with dates and days of weeks’’.

                     With dates

                     Days of week

On special days(Christmas day, valentine's day, and others)

They meet with each other on valentine's day.

Special case: at weekend/on weekend

Use of IN

''It is used to represent the period or dates’’.

Example:

  1. He was born in the summer.
  2. He was born in 1987.
  3. It was too hot in the middle of June, so don’t blame him for quitting the gathering.

He came just in time (that is, he came before the fixed time). Don’t confuse this with on time, it means no late at all.

To represent the period;

  1. He faced difficulties in the 1970s at the hand of undemocratic forces.

  1. Don’t take these matters beforehand, we will sort out these problems in the future in a better way.

                      In the Morning

                      In the Evening

                     In the  Afternoon

To represent the amount of time;

  1. We shall complete this project in just one week.
  2. Don’t worry you will get this in a couple of days.

Use of BY

‘’It is used specifically to represent the end time’’.

Example:

It means no later than that.

  1. Deposit these dues by the end of this weekend.

So here is the anomaly that you must learn to best comprehend these concepts.

Examples:

  1. In the evening
  2. In the morning
  3. In the afternoon
  4. At the night

It is better to learn these things in context with other words they are used with.
