 The difference between ‘has been, ‘have been, and ‘had been’

A sea change happened to be seen while switching from one verb to another in daily conversation.  

Present perfect continuous 


I, We, You, They, and any Plural Noun carry ‘have been.

While

He, She, It, uncountable nouns or any singular noun takes ‘has been.


Past perfect continuous 


In this tense every subject carries ‘had been.


Use. 1


Transport experiences


Present perfect continuous 

Past perfect continuous 

  • He has been to the USA many many times( He has visited the USA many times).

  • We have never been to Italy.

  • Has he been to Pakistan ever in his life?

  • I have been to world scenery places many times.

We can use ‘had been’ for Travel experiences when talking about two events in the past.

  • When he visited London last year, he had never been to the UK before.




Beware, it doesn't for any specific visit like;

“I have been to the UK last year” WRONG

Actions that starts in past and still continuing 


Present perfect continuous 

Past perfect continuous

  • I have been researching politics for almost three years.

  • He has been working for 3 hours.

  • We have been studying at this college since 2003.



  • He had been doing well before he came across an accident.

  • Secret agencies had not been leaving any stone unturned for this grand event when a climactic incident just happened and destroyed everything.


Use. 3

We use them in the passive voice.

  • Your offer has been accepted( The HR department accepted your offer)

  • Mistakes have been made.

  • The crackdown had just been launched when illegal parking was wiped out.

  • He had been watching the movie when we got him.



Note:

Passive voice sentences this help remove the extra subjects, it is mostly used by politicians and companies.
